Flower freshness

The right way to keep flowers fresh

In many cases, too little fresh-keeping agent is used because the actual amount of water in vases is underestimated.
Most fresh-keeping agents contain sugar to feed the cut flowers and acid, which lowers the pH value of the water so that hardly any bacteria can multiply. The ideal value for minimal bacterial growth is between 3 and 5 (this can be checked with a pH measuring strip from the pharmacy)
Cut flowers are treated with preservatives from the moment they are harvested - by the grower - by the wholesaler - by the discounter - by the florist. If this chain is interrupted, bacteria can develop.

Important: Once bacteria have settled on the stem, it does not help to use cling film without first disinfecting the stems. Any bacteria already present will not be destroyed by cling film.
For optimum care, cut flowers should be cut diagonally with a sharp knife.

Caution: A large cut surface provides a larger surface area for bacteria to attack.
Regularly changing the water is not enough to prevent the growth of bacteria - nor is brushing and scrubbing the vases. The bacteria will not die off if the vases dry out.

Chlorine cleaners are suitable for effective disinfection. (e.g. the "Oasis Floralife Cleaner" - the disinfection is also based on chlorine but is less odor-intensive)

A spray bottle can be used for cleaning, then leave to act for at least 15 minutes - then the bacteria are killed.
